Ottawa, Canada – Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reported a significant increase in its application backlog, reaching a new high of 1,078,300 as of August 31, 2024. This marks a 7.6% increase from July and follows a similar surge in the previous month.

The backlog now accounts for nearly half of all applications in process, with temporary residence applications experiencing the most substantial delays. IRCC attributes the growing backlog to a combination of factors, including increased demand, staffing shortages, and the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite efforts to streamline processes and improve efficiency, IRCC is facing challenges in meeting its service standards for many application types. The department has acknowledged the need for further improvements and has committed to reviewing and updating its service standards by the end of the year.

While the backlog continues to rise, IRCC remains committed to processing applications as efficiently as possible and has implemented various measures to address the issue. These include expanding online services, prioritizing essential worker applications, and reducing the number of temporary residents admitted to Canada.
